The Two Full Professional Sports Teams That Just Kneeled For The Anthem

(Right Country) – Over the weekend, the National Women’s Soccer League launched the Challenge Cup tournament in Utah with a very bold political statement.

All 22 players and the reserves for the Portland Thorns as well as the North Carolina Courage knelt during the national anthem in a game televised by CBS.

Before the game, the players and their coaches wore Black Lives Matter t-shirts for warmups.

Before the game, the teams released a statement before the game reading:

We took a knee today to protest racial injustice, police brutality and systemic racism against Black people and people of color in America. We love our country and we have taken this opportunity to hold it to a higher standard. It is our duty to demand that the liberties and freedoms this nation was founded upon are extended to everyone.

After the game, Courage midfielder stated after the game, “Today, hopefully, it was a powerful statement. It was an emotional time and I hope that both teams’ message comes through clearly.”

She continued, “I think we want to keep this momentum and keep the attention on the Black Lives Matter movement throughout this tournament.”

Defender for the Thorns, Becky Sauerbrunn added: “The (players’ association) has been about collaborating with teams on what we can do to maintain and sustain the conversation around racial injustice in this country. We made a strong statement and we wanted to kind of maintain that momentum that has been happening and to show official commitment to the cause.”

Megan Rapinoe, the notorious and outspoken US national women’s soccer team star knelt before an NWSL game when she played for the Seattle Reign, tweeted: “You love to see it. You love to see these women using their voice, demanding better for America, and for black people and people of color. @TheNCCourage and @ThornsFC kneeling in solidarity with @Kaepernick7 and @Blklivesmatter.”

“During Saturday’s late match between the Chicago Red Stars and the Washington Spirit, a few players remained standing,” ESPN reported, adding that Spirit Coach Richie Burke, who also knelt, said, that “I’m grateful for everything this country has given me, but I feel the need to support the Black Lives Matter movement because I know this privilege isn’t the same for everyone. This is just the start. There is much more work to be done.”

On June 10, US Soccer announced that they would no longer be requring their players to stand during the national anthem.

They said in a statement at the time:

U.S. Soccer affirms Black Lives Matter, and we support the fight against racial injustices.

The U.S. Soccer Board of Directors voted yesterday afternoon to repeal Policy 604-1, which required our players to stand during the national anthem. The policy was put in place after Megan Rapinoe kneeled in solidarity with the peaceful protest inspired by Colin Kaepernick, who was protesting police brutality, and the systematic oppression of Black people and people of color in America. It has become clear that this policy was wrong and detracted from the important message of Black Lives Matter.

We have not done enough to listen – especially to our players – to understand and acknowledge the very real and meaningful experiences of Black and other minority communities in our country. We apologize to our players – especially our Black players – staff, fans, and all who support eradicating racism. Sports are a powerful platform for good, and we have not used our platform as effectively as we should have. We can do more on these specific issues and we will.

It should be, and will be going forward, up to our players to determine how they can best use their platforms to fight all forms of racism, discrimination, and inequality. We are here for our players and are ready to support them in elevating their efforts to achieve social justice. We cannot change the past, but we can make a difference in the future. We are committed to this change effort, and we will be implementing supporting actions in the near future.

  1. As each sport becomes politicized it is reason to turn it off and not spend my resources on it or the sponsor thus eventually reducing the elitist participants wages.

  2. And this is another reason not to have had a television for over two years. More liberal political BS and giving America the middle finger.

  3. I nominate these two teams for the Turdus Ignoramus Award jointly for their lack of knowledge and understanding of the history and significance of America’s national anthem and America’s national emblem.

  4. I agree, Mary. The country has been attacked by a radical racist group threatening each step of the way – with roots in Hamas and the muslim brotherhood. Shame

  5. All lives matter, we should honor our law enforcement Officers, not demonize them for protecting our citizens and their properties. BLM is not a symbol of injustice, it has become a symbol for Police hatred, and anarchism, by force, they refuse to stand against rioting and plundering. US Sports leagues and their players by promoting that their players should kneel is an act promoting civil disobedience and abetting the overthrow of our country. You just gave me more ammunition for not supporting their players who somehow think they are the chosen few to lead our country to socialism. Your league and players are ignorant to a fault. We are all americans.

    • It may have been about George Floyd in the beginning but it long ago “morphed” into something insidious giving the Marxist left democrats a foot in the door to bring down our wonderful country and help further their agenda of the New World Order. Nobody gives a flip about women’s soccer anyway. Megan Rapinoe with her pink hair and her vulgar “white trash” behavior will start complaining when Transgender men who want to compete as women will beat her and her team without even trying.

      • Sorry I don’t even believe BLM was authentic in the beginning after Mr. Floyd was unjustly treated. BLM started with Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman encounter. Then it escalated in Hands Up Don’t Shoot Michael Brown fallacy. George Floyd should not of been treated this way but he should not of resisted in the inevitable arrest. What don’t everyone get COMPLY wether the cop is right or wrong COMPLY and fight it in court.

  6. Bringing soccer to the United States is just another ploy in the globalization of America, like the metric system and the Olympic games.

  7. This thinking and attitude is becoming more pervasive. I am so frightened for our country – which is being hacked away in big chunks by these people who seem to hate what America stands for. Our proud history is being destroyed so fast it is dizzying. President Trump is standing firm for us, but how long will he be able to weather this storm. There will be nothing left of our history pretty soon and does anybody care?? God Help us.

  8. Have no interests in watching athletes support marxism, and destroying our history and heritage. Same with the NFL, FU to all of you pigs.

  9. Women’s unprofessional Soccer is pure scum. Never have and never will been to a match nor seen one on TV except accidently while channel surfacing. A totally un-American sport for whiners and idiots.

  10. Boy, I feel better now. Donate your personal time to the black communities in your cities and help them to grow and prosper. That’s a commitment. Then you will show your genuine concern. Your taking the easy way out – I don’t believe you.

  11. All lives don’t matter except we are innocent until proven guilty. In the Bible, God says if we are without love, we are nothing. And, “by their fruits, you shall know them.” Do these rioters act as though they have love? Is burning down somebody’s business an act of love and “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you?” God will said to them, “I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.”

  12. This is a simple fix. Don’t watch them don’t buy memorabilia for yourself or your children. Don’t attend any games or watch on TV. Once sponsors see the lack of support and attendance its over. President Trump needs to sign an Executive Order that any player on a U.S. National team doesn’t stand and respect the flag automatic termination for life and forfeit of all salaries even sponsor money and you must payback all expenses paid during tryouts, scrimmages and season played. This includes meals, uniforms, housing, medical treatments, transportation and supplies. Hit them in their pockets, this goes for NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR and Soccer. See how they feel when owners can’t pay their exorbitant salaries and leagues aren’t getting these big TV contracts because of lack of audience. WE can dictate this it will take time it’s up to you.
